How to Prepare for a Land Clearing Walk-Through
Get an accurate quote on the first visit — what to mark, measure, and ask before a land clearing crew walks your property.
A walk-through is where a land clearing quote goes from a ballpark to a firm number. A little prep beforehand means a faster visit, a more accurate price, and no surprises on work day. Here's what we ask Central Kentucky landowners to do before we come out.
Know your boundaries
The single biggest source of confusion on clearing jobs is where the work stops. Find your property pins or a recent survey, and flag the corners and lines where clearing should end — especially along a neighbor's fence row.
Flag the keepers
Tie bright flagging tape around every tree, shrub, or feature you want to keep. It takes ten minutes and saves the most common regret in land clearing: a favorite oak or dogwood lost in a thicket.
- Mature hardwoods you want to keep for shade or wildlife
- Fence posts, old wire, and gates hidden in the brush
- Springs, wet spots, sinkholes, and drainage paths
- Buried lines — call Kentucky 811 a few days ahead if anything runs near the work area
Think through access
Our mulcher arrives on a truck and trailer that needs room to park and unload. Note gate widths, soft spots in the driveway, low wires, and where a trailer can turn around. If the only way in crosses a pasture or yard, say so — we'll plan around wet weather.
Decide what the land should become
Pasture, trails, a food plot, a building site, or just opened-up woods — the end goal changes how close we clear, how fine we mulch, and what follow-up we suggest. Not sure yet? Our project planner can help you sort it out before the visit.
Have your questions ready
Write down anything you want answered: timeline, how long the mulch takes to break down, whether stumps get ground flush, and what regrowth to expect. Our list of questions to ask a land clearing contractor is a good starting point, and our walk-through checklist covers every item to bring and every feature to flag before we arrive.
Frequently asked
- How long does a land clearing walk-through take?
- Most walk-throughs take 20–45 minutes depending on acreage. Larger or more complex properties can take an hour.
- Do I need to be there for the walk-through?
- It's best if you are, so we can confirm boundaries and keepers together. If you can't, flagged trees and a quick phone call afterward work well.
- Is the estimate free?
- Yes. Walk-throughs and written estimates are free, with no obligation. Most jobs land between $1,200 and $3,000 per acre.
